A sustainable yacht is built with long-term value in mind. This includes responsible material choices, efficient construction, durability, serviceability, future upgrade possibilities and a design that helps the yacht remain useful and valuable for many years.
Where luxury and responsibility come together
At Van der Heijden Yachts, we believe true luxury also means responsibility. That is why we build our motor yachts exclusively in aluminum and steel: honest materials known for their strength, safety, recyclability and long-term value.
By combining smart material choices with Dutch craftsmanship, in-house construction and future-ready engineering, we create yachts built to perform, endure and remain valuable for decades.
Sustainable yachting starts with material choice
Every yacht starts with its foundation. For Van der Heijden Yachts, that foundation is always aluminum, steel or a carefully engineered combination of both.
These materials allow us to build strong, serviceable and highly custom yachts without the limitations of fixed moulds. They support long-term ownership, future refits and responsible material use.
Whether the focus is speed, long-range comfort, inland cruising or large-scale luxury, we select the right material around the yacht’s purpose and the owner’s ambitions.
Aluminum
Lightweight, efficient and recyclable
Aluminum is one of the most future-focused materials in yacht building. It is strong, lightweight and highly versatile, making it ideal for yachts where performance, efficiency and design freedom are important.
Aluminum is also highly recyclable without loss of quality. This means that even at the end of a yacht’s long lifespan, the material can be reused for new applications while retaining its original properties.
Because aluminum is significantly lighter than steel, it can also contribute to lower fuel consumption and reduced operating costs. Combined with its natural corrosion resistance, this makes aluminum a strong choice for owners who value performance, comfort and responsible long-term ownership.
Key benefits
- Highly recyclable
- Lightweight and strong
- Efficient performance
- Lower fuel consumption potential
- Natural corrosion resistance
- Excellent design freedom
- Strong long-term value
Steel
Proven durability over time
Steel has been trusted in yacht building for generations. It offers a strong, proven and dependable foundation, especially for yachts focused on comfort, stability and long-term durability.
When properly treated and maintained, steel can last for decades. It is also fully recyclable and widely available, making it a responsible choice for robust yacht construction.
For many yachts, a steel hull combined with an aluminum superstructure creates an excellent balance between strength, stability, comfort and design flexibility.
Key benefits
- Fully recyclable
- Strong and durable
- Proven material for yacht building
- Comfortable cruising behaviour
- Suitable for long-range and displacement yachts
- Excellent foundation for larger custom builds
- Strong value retention
Responsible production in Waalwijk
Every Van der Heijden yacht is built entirely in-house at our shipyard in Waalwijk, the Netherlands. This gives us full control over engineering, material use, construction quality and finishing.
We minimise waste through efficient material planning and systematic recycling of aluminum and steel remains. For our interiors, we use FSC- and PEFC-certified wood, supporting responsible forest management and a more conscious approach to luxury yacht interiors.
Built to retain value
Sustainability is also about building yachts that last. Van der Heijden yachts are designed for long-term ownership, strong performance and future serviceability.
Aluminum and steel support maintenance, repairs, refits and upgrades, helping each yacht remain relevant and valuable over time. More than 400 Van der Heijden yachts have been built over the past decades, demonstrating the lasting quality of our construction philosophy.
Future-ready technology and long-term support
A sustainable yacht should be ready for the future. Our yachts can be prepared for future upgrades, including hybrid or electric propulsion systems where technically suitable. Digital maintenance tools, performance monitoring and preventive service programmes help owners keep their yacht in optimal condition.
Our involvement does not end at delivery. Service, maintenance advice, refits and upgrade possibilities help each yacht remain reliable, enjoyable and valuable for many years to come.
